As requested, JETCC assists State and Federal agencies with training
events and conferences that are designed for specifically targeted groups
of environmental professionals. Past training has focused on Mercury,
Lead, Oil and Chemical Transport as well as superfund clean up. Sometimes,
participation in this training is by invitation only for a selected party
or regulatory body. Most frequently, this training is open to anyone who
works in a designated profession and the event is advertised through
notices that are distributed via organized mailings. A couple significant
events are highlighted here.
“Achieving Mercury Reductions in
Products and Waste: Coordinating National and Local Government
Initiatives” JETCC received funding from Maine DEP to coordinate a
three-day conference that took place May 23-25 in Portland, Maine. Along
with Maine DEP, other partners included EPA New England, Northeast Waste
Management Officials Association (NEWMOA), New England Interstate Water
Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) and the QuickSilver Caucus.
Regulatory personnel from all 50 states were invited to participate in
this conference.

This training occurs periodically and is normally funded under contract
with Maine Emergency Management Agency’s (MEMA) State Emergency Response
Commission (SERC). With instruction by responders from Maine Department of
Environmental Protection, and partnership with MEMA, numerous fuel and
chemical companies supply demonstration vehicles for the hands-on portion
of the training while regional emergency response commissions and fire
departments assist with local logistics. The target audience includes
first responders, fire department personnel, hazmat teams, law enforcement
personnel, shippers and transporters of hazardous materials. Historically
the sessions are scheduled in the late summer or autumn months.
