IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATE: Currently, all PSI testing centers in Maine and New Hampshire are open.  However, please be aware that each test center has its own COVID-19 policy. This may include providing proof of vaccination and/or a mask mandate. We encourage you to check the PSI website before traveling to an exam site to verify the policy at that location. If you cannot meet the requirements of a specific test center, you will need to reschedule your exam at another location.

Wastewater Operator Exam

Maine Wastewater Operator Certification exams adminstered using a computerized test. Computer-Based Testing (CBT) gives examinees a convenient testing schedule, more opportunities to take the Biological or Physical-Chemical exam, and receive results immediately upon completion of the exam.

PSI provides testing services for the exam. Exams can be scheduled at any PSI Assessment Center in the United States. There are currently PSI Assessment Centers located in Portland, South Portland, Auburn, Farmington, Bangor, and Presque Isle, as well as a location in Portsmouth, NH.

CBT Exam applications must be submitted to the NEIWPCC South Portland/JETCC office. The CBT application fee is $125 payable to NEIWPCC/JETCC. This fee allows an examinee to take the same grade level exam as many times as needed within a two-year approval period. Unless applying for a different grade level or the two-year period has expired, it is not necessary to reapply to NEIWPCC/JETCC or pay another application fee. There is a separate exam administration fee payable to PSI for each attempt.

Biolological Grade Qualification Table: Refer to Chapter 531 Regulations for Wastewater Operator Certification for information and specific requirements for each grade level. Use the following chart to assist you in determining the Biological grade level exam you may qualify for:

The application fee for reciprocity is $250 payable to NEIWPCC/JETCC.
